How to Play Strands: Uncovering Themed Words and Spangrams
Welcome to PuzzleVerse’s strategy guide for Strands, the daily word search puzzle that requires both keen observation and thematic deduction.
In Strands, you are given a 6x8 letter grid and an enigmatic daily clue (such as "In the bakery" or "Heavy metal"). Every single letter in the grid belongs to exactly one theme word, with zero unused letters left behind when the puzzle is solved.
Game Mechanics & Rules
- Swipe or Tap to Connect: Form words by tracing adjacent letters horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Letters can bend and twist in any direction.
- Theme Words (Blue): Words that directly relate to today’s clue turn blue when submitted.
- The Spangram (Yellow): Every puzzle has one special theme word called the Spangram. It touches two opposite edges of the board (top to bottom or left to right) and reveals the overarching theme of the day.
- Hint Words: Submitting non-theme valid English words of 4+ letters fills your hint meter. Once full, a hint highlights the letters of an unsolved theme word.
Expert Strands Tactics
- Identify the Spangram Early: Finding the Spangram bisects the grid and isolates the remaining theme words into smaller clusters.
- Trace Corners First: Corner letters have the fewest connections. If a corner has a "Z" or "Q", look at its only 2 or 3 neighbors to determine the word immediately.
- Build Up the Hint Meter: If you get stuck on the theme, find 3 regular words to unlock a hint rather than making random guesses.
