Connections Strategy Guide: How to Master 16-Word Groupings
Connections has quickly become one of the most viral and satisfying daily puzzles on the web. But unlike Wordle, where clues are purely structural (green and yellow letters), Connections is psychological. The puzzle creator intentionally plants overlapping associations, deceptive wordplay, and red herrings to lead you astray.
Understanding the Four Color Tiers
Every Connections puzzle contains four secret categories classified by difficulty:
- π¨ Yellow (Straightforward): Direct, literal categories (e.g., "Types of dogs", "Kitchen utensils").
- π© Green (Moderate): Synonyms or basic thematic relationships (e.g., "Words meaning tiny", "Parts of an automobile").
- π¦ Blue (Challenging): Specialized knowledge, compound words, or trivia (e.g., "____ Board", "Monopoly properties").
- πͺ Purple (Tricky): Wordplay, homophones, letter substitutions, or backwards words (e.g., "Words that become palindromes if doubled", "Words with silent letters").
The 5 Golden Rules of Connections Solving
1. Never Submit Your First 4-Word Group Immediately
If four words scream an obvious category (like RED, BLUE, GREEN, ORANGE), scan the remaining 12 words first! If you see YELLOW as well, you are looking at a 5-word red herring trap. One of those colors belongs to another category (such as "Agent Orange" or "Blue Jeans").
2. Look for the "Odd Ducks" First
Words with highly specific or unusual meanings are often your best anchor point. If you see a word like "OUNCE", it can either mean a unit of weight or a snow leopard. If there are no other big cats, it must be units of weight.
3. Say the Words Out Loud
Purple categories frequently rely on auditory wordplay and homophones (e.g., "Words that sound like letters of the alphabet" or "Rhyming pairs"). Reading silently hides phonetic links.
4. Test Common Compound Word Prefixes & Suffixes
Whenever you see innocuous words like "CAKE", "BALL", "MAN", or "PAPER", try attaching words to them: Cup____, ____ball, News____, Fire____. This reveals hidden compound categories instantly.
5. Take Advantage of "One Away" Hints
When the game informs you that your guess is "One away...", do not blindly swap one random word. Look closely at the four items you submitted. Three of them are correct. Re-examine which single word has an alternate meaning.
